Australian golf ball bomb victim Michael Boggan given $88,000
Posted By: Shopprice New Zealand
An Australian teenager badly injured by a golf ball bomb will receive more than $NZ88,000 from a community fund to help with his ongoing medical and rehabilitation expenses.Michael Boggan was 15 when he picked up the device near Brisbane, Queensland, in May 2013.He had no idea it was a home-made bomb filled with powder and ball bearings, which exploded and inflicted catastrophic injuries.
Michael lost all but his pinkie on his left hand and several fingers on his right”I’ve only got the pinkie and three fingers. Nothing else,” he told Channel 7 news IN 2013.”All I remember is I was shaking it up a little bit and then boom I couldn’t see or hear.”All the kids out there if you find anything unfamiliar, don’t pick it up.”
The Ipswich mayor’s community fund ran an appeal to help with medical costs, raising $90,728.06The money has been administered through a committee, but since Michael turned 18 in April he can now be responsible for what remains in the trust – $A85,000 ($NZ88,000)
Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the council had helped Michael with financial management. “Today he’s got to look after his own fund and he’ll be responsible for making sure he reports back to the city about how he’s using the money,” he said.”He’s going to need a different type of car, where he lives … things that you and I can do, he can’t do anymore.”Michael was in good spirits and had been working towards completing more education, Pisasale said.
A court case against two men had caused the family ongoing stress, he added.”He’s a young kid and it just goes to show what Australia’s all about,” Pisasale said.”I love this city because when people are down and out, people dig into their pockets and help people who need it.”
The fund was called into question when allegations against Pisasale were referred to the state’s Crime and Corruption Commission, but he was later cleared.”(That was) putting a grey cloud over a fund that was set up to help the community over the years .. I’m glad it’s been cleared.”
