Very great slips have decimated parts of the South Island main box for journey Rail Line along the Kaikoura go down slope, supporters the size 7.5 earth shock overnight. In some parts, the rail line has been uplifted from its bases and shunted onto the seabed. The line has changed front turned to the side by around 100m in some places.

In other fields, the line has completely gone from view under rockfalls along the narrow transport long and narrow way inside a building between Conway Flat south of Kaikoura, to Kekerengu, where the line heads inland to Marlborough.KiwiRail chief manager of business Peter Reidy says it could be 2 days before they have knowledge of the amount of the damage to the nearby rail network 1.

“As we send our working group out to carefully look at, we have got to take them back if there are aftershocks, and then they will have to go out again.”There is still no value on how long any damage could take to fix, but first copies of picture suggest it is at least on the same scale as the Christchurch (earth) shakings of 2010 and 2011.As for the price, Mr Reidy has not started having thoughts about it, saying the chief place is on safety.

KiwiRail is working closely with New Zealand Transport instrument to get contractors out to acted-on sites as soon as possible.”We Have done this before. There are slips in New Zealand that do come about, so we have approved design for how that comes to mind.”Rail bridges have also been acted-on, with the rail line getting bent on the abutments and views.

The on foot overbridge at Ava railway Station in lower Hutt is shut until it can be made likely safe for trains to way under.”The bridges you do not have knowledge of until you do your to do with structure check-out, and we are doing those as we talk,” says Mr Reidy. He is with selfbelief the Greymouth to Christchurch journeying train will go on operating as normal, but the Picton to Christchurch is shut for now.

With the main box for journey line out of acting, KiwiRail is hoping keep goods for transport moving by going into (army) the help of nearby coastal shipping operators. The line connecting Blenheim and Picton opened in 1875 after making was undertaken from Christchurch to of the north seats of in Canterbury in the 1870s. A line through Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Amberley reached Waipara in 1880.
